Josephine Baker (1906 – 1975)

Josephine Baker was one of the most important figures in 20th century popular culture. Not only was Josephine a legendary performer and entertainer, she was also a French Resistance Agent and a civil rights activist.

Born into poverty in the United States in 1906, it was Baker’s career as an Entertainer which lead her to France. At 19, she opened ‘La Revue Negre’ in Paris, a revolutionary show featuring Baker performing erotic dance routines. Her risqué performances and great humour lead Josephine to become a huge star in France. Her costume featuring a skirt designed to appear as a string of bananas was one of the defining images of the Jazz Age and influential on the Art Deco movement.

By 1937 Baker had become a French citizen stating: “I have two loves, my country and Paris” (or as per this poster “J’ai deux amours, mon pays et Paris”). Also a singer, one of her most famous songs being “J’ai Deux Amours”.
