Eileen Evans (1921-2006) and Reginald Mount (1906-1979) as The Mount/ Evans Design Studio: An original poster design artwork for the British Railways Southern Region poster ‘See Britain by Train – Our Heritage, Cricket’, circa 1956.

The illustration depicts a cricketer in early 18th century style clothing. The drawing is in black ink, gouache and pencil on paper on artists board. It is inscribed “1 sharp print please unglazed glossy”. Overlaid with tracing paper.  

Dimensions: Artists board overall approximately 21.5cm high x 16.5cm wide.

Condition report: Overall condition very good – slight paper discolouration visible to edges, some rounding to board corners, tracing paper with creases and loose. Displays very well.

The finished poster using this design features an image of contemporary mid century cricket match. The illustration here representing the early days of the sport.

The Artists

Edward Reginald Mount (1906 – 1979) was a British artist and graphic designer know particularly for his poster designs. During the Second World War he worked for the Ministry for Information producing propaganda and public safety posters. Mount first began working here with Eileen Evans, who would become his long-term collaborator.

Eileen Evans (1921-2006) was a British artist and graphic designer who began her career in the Ministry of Information designing public information and propaganda posters during the Second World War. It was here that she began her collaboration with Reginald Mount.

Mount and Evans formed their business the Mount/ Evans Studio during the 1950s. The studios output included posters, album cover art and promotional material of all types. The Keep Britain Tidy illustrations from this period are perhaps some of their most recognisable. They additionally produced work for the Department of Health and the British Army. Reginald Mount and Eileen Evans pieces do not often appear on the open market – the original artwork produced by Mount for the iconic movie poster for The Ladykillers sold at auction in 2019 for a hammer price of £12,000.
