REGINALD MOUNT (1906-1979) An original cartoon illustration for Punch Magazine, circa 1960.

The automotive themed design depicts two security guards inside a museum car gallery. There are several empty spaces where historic cars were displayed (now presumably stolen!).
The illustration is captioned “I thought you were told to keep this section of the Museum locked during the current crisis”. The work is inscribed in pencil to lower margin ‘URGENT for June 8 issue’ dated top right ‘June 3’. Additionally inscribed to reverse “Reginald Mount”.
We are selling this piece together with an original clipping from Punch Magazine of the finished printed cartoon.
Dimensions: The board 25.5cm high x 33cm wide
Condition report: Very good condition overall – discolouration to edges, rounding to corners and some bump marks. Displays very well. Clipping with handling creases.
Reginald Mount OBE (1906 – 1979) was a British artist and graphic designer know particularly for his poster designs. During the Second World War he worked for the Ministry for Information producing propaganda and public safety posters. Mount first began working here with Eileen Evans, who would become his long-term collaborator.
Many of Reginald Mount’s posters are instantly recognisable including his now iconic design for Ealing Studios Comedy The Ladykillers (1955).
Reginald Mount and Eileen Evans formed the Mount/ Evans Studio during the 1950s where their output included posters, album cover art and promotional material of all types. The Keep Britain Tidy illustrations from this period are perhaps some of their most famous. Reginald Mount pieces do not often appear on the market, the original artwork for The Ladykillers sold in 2019 for over £12,000.
