The History

This Crown and Sceptre lithograph is part of a series entitled Coronation Suite. The series comprises 36 prints produced by 34 artists, commissioned by the Royal College of Art in 1953.

Produced under the guidance of Edwin La Dell (Head of the Department of Lithography) the aim of the series was to produce prints with mass market appeal commemorating the Coronation of HM Queen Elizabeth II, whilst celebrating lithography.

Many of the works included in the series were executed by former pupils of the Royal College of Art. The collection was exhibited at the Redfern Gallery and offered for sale by the Artist International Association, during the Coronation year.

A number of notable artist were involved in the project including Edward Bawden; John Piper; John Minton; Julian Trevelyan and Edwin La Dell.
