The Film

The Asphalt Jungle, is a classic 1950s film noir and heist movie, directed by the legendary John Huston.

Despite this being her eighth film, Marilyn Monroe was a little known actress, The Asphalt Jungle proved to be her breakout role. Monroe appeared in the film as ‘Angela Phinlay’ and she considered it one of her best performances.

Later releases of the film included Marilyn, by then a big star, as the central image on posters and advertisements. However, for the original 1950 release Monroe’s name was not even mentioned on the poster (although her face does feature). This lobby card is one of the most prominent promotional pieces to show an image of her.

Lobby Cards

Lobby cards were advertising cards, produced in the U.S, typically as sets of 8 to promote upcoming releases. Unlike posters, lobby cards use a smaller format (ordinarily 11 x 14 inches) and were printed for display in the lobby of a cinema (rather than the exterior), providing insight into key scenes from a coming attraction often with a title card, similar to the poster for the release.

Our shop includes additional lobby cards see: CLASSIC HOLLYWOOD: A Place In The Sun, 1951 – An original vintage U.S lobby card
